Unforgettable Fire (1984)
"Bad" (click to listen)
If “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is an anti-terrorism song, then “Bad” is an anti-drug song. Written for a friend who became a slave to heroin, the phrases “I’m wade awake, I’m wide awake, I’m not sleeping” and “If I could, you know I would, If I could, I would let it go, surrender” reference that struggle. Bono has said that he never had enough time to finish the lyric the way he wanted to...so he just changes them live. When you’re Bono, you can do that.
"Pride":
Political Bono at his best, but once again, he claims the lyrics were not exactly what he wanted. Obviously Edge’s iconic (and technically ground breaking) guitar line on this song carries it from beginning to end. My kids (and yours) need to be able to recognize this song within the first four notes.
